Katie called from Reno yesterday at 4:45 am. She
wanted to know why safety vehicles were driving through her
neighborhood with flashing lights and honking horns. She was
staying with Travis 500 yards from the Truckee River, and it was
raining at the time. She spend the day looking for high
ground.
The last major flood occurred in 1997, the year I was hired by Washoe
County. I left the County in June when Paulette accepted a
transfer to Marietta, GA. Soon after we arrived
here it rained 10 inches in one day.

Rains from a Pacific storm pummeled the region
Saturday, causing widespread flooding in Reno, Sparks and Carson City.
The relentless storm crippled travel on Interstate 80, created power
outages and forced the evacuation of homes from Lockwood to Dayton.
Reno officials postponed New Year's Eve fireworks in downtown until
tonight.
"It's not a '97 event, but it is major flooding," said Gary Barbato, a
hydrologist from the National Weather Service.
A major mudslide trapped six tractor-trailers and buried
Interstate 80 west of Reno. Officials closed the road and said they'll
need at least two days to clear it, the primary link between Reno and
Northern California.
Costs could total millions.
Cleanup could cost $5 million.
